COYOTES – HOW TO REDUCE CONTACT
At Squared Away Pest Control we understand your need for highly effective service. We use the least invasive method at pest eradication first; we escalate only as needed to resolve your pest problem quickly and safely.
Coyotes are usually frightened of people and will run away when confronted with loud noises, yelling, or clapping. But a coyote that has become “habituated” – i.e. dependent on food provided by humans - can act boldly towards humans, including: approaching leashed pets; approaching and following people; and won’t run away when confronted by a human.
Our general guidance for prevention of conflicts with coyotes, includes reducing the presence of them on your property, through the following methods:
- Cut back brushy edges - Be sure to keep brushy edges in your yard trimmed, as these areas provide cover for coyotes and their prey.
- Secure garbage - Coyotes raid open trash materials & compost piles. Be sure to secure all trash in tough plastic containers with tight-fitting lids; if possible, keep trash in secure buildings, in secure plastic receptacles.
- Ensure bird feeders and pet food are inaccessible – use bird feeders designed to keep seed off the ground and clean spilled seed daily. Store all bird seed and pet food in a secure building, or if it needs to be outside, ensure that it is stored in a tough a plastic container with tight-fitting lid; where possible, feed pets indoors.
These recommendations are consistent with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts guidance on prevention of conflicts with coyotes, which can be found on the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife website.
